Six Proven Ways to Increase Your Church's Giving

By guest writer, Dr. Rod Rogers

Along with praying about your offerings, there are many actions you can take as a pastor that, in combination, have proven to increase church giving by 10 to 60 percent. Here are just a few:

1. Preach a series on biblical stewardship.

A series is twice as likely to increase giving as a stand-alone sermon. Make sure every sermon is full of Scripture.

2. Give generously to the church you pastor and share your stewardship testimony with your congregation.

Your example as pastor has a powerful influence on your people's giving. Tell the percentage and the dollar amount of your giving. Reveal how God has blessed you as a result.

3. Have lay people share their personal stewardship testimonies.

These should include what they give and how they've been blessed spiritually, emotionally, and financially as a result. This will increase people's faith and stimulate their giving.

4. Send out quarterly giving receipts with a thank you note from the pastor.

Many pastors never thank their people for giving to the church. People are more likely to keep giving if they receive some acknowledgement of their sacrifice. If they've given less than they planned, a quarterly reminder gives them an opportunity to increase their giving. It also provides a non-threatening reminder of the need to give.

5.  Put the giving/budget statistics in the weekly bulletin.  People need to know how their giving is matching up to the budget goals for the year. If giving is ahead of budget, they feel healthy satisfaction. If it is behind budget, the statistics provide a quiet encouragement to be more faithful.

6. Remind people during December that they only have a few weeks to make any extra tax-deductible donations they might be planning to give to the church.  Many people will give large year-end donations to your church…if you ask them to.
